About Me

I work with individuals and companies on their web presence, marketing strategies, and overall optimization. I’ve been known to even help them on digital design, photography, and video work.

Hello, I’m Steven Herr

I was given my first computer, an Apple IIc, when I was the ripe old age of five. Two years later, I used my first version of Photoshop, on a Macintosh LC, to create a drawing that can only be described as terrible. I’m going to blame this on the fact Photoshop didn’t have layers yet. From this point, I went on to code my first website during a middle school club in 1997 using Notepad and Netscape Navigator. Yes, there was, in fact, a GIF of a mailbox opening that linked to my email address. From that point on, I’ve consistently been learning new ways to create artwork on computers and the web.

Over the last 20 years working with computers, I’ve accumulated a wealth of experience and practice with a wide range of languages and software. I specialize in front end development using HTML, CSS, Javascript / jQuery as well as optimizing sites for SEO and to work with  Adwords. I am also very proficient with PHP, MySQL, WordPress and most other backend code.

My Story and Experience

I began my foray into web design and development in 2004. For over 10 years, I had the privilege of teaching high school students how to create interactive modern designs usingWorking on the Land Rover. Look at that beard. web-based standards. I personally found that instructing students to code was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had so far. It constantly pushed me to stay current with design trends. Also, I feel that a person does not fully understand how anything really works until they have tried to help a high school student fix their 500 line javascript image gallery.

I’m very proud of my students and their successes in the career paths they chose after high school. In fact, several of them went on to win national awards for their design/programming skills. During my time working at the high school, I also took on the role as the school district’s Web Manager which included overseeing the modernization of their site and the management of 10+ people in multiple locations.

Since leaving the school I have been the Web Manager and Online Marketer for Rovers North, an online retailer. During the last four years working there, I have retooled and optimized parts of the backend, completely revamped the frontend to improve customer experience,  built a new integration for marketing/emails, and created a new Google Adwords / Facebook ads / remarketing campaigns.

What You Can Find Me doing Outside of work

Restoring Cars

I’ve always enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment when fixing something with your own hands. I’m currently most of the way through a frame up restoration of a 1967 Land Rover Series IIA.

Baking

If I’m stuck indoors you will most likely find me baking or developing a new recipe and testing it on friends. For five years I owned a cake and cupcake catering company.

Photography

I enjoy photographing cars, architecture and food I’ve created. Most weekends during the summer you can find me either shooting a wedding or out exploring with my camera.

Biking

If I’m not doing the three previous activities, and it’s one of the 5 sunny days in VT, you’ll probably find me on my road bike. Not a mountain bike, I don’t have that skill and we don’t talk about it.

I’m ready when you are! Your new beautiful website is right around the corner.
